A Repeatable Solve Routine

Eight passes, in order. The routine works because it scans the hive from different angles: the required letter first, then familiar shapes, families, and the clue grid when free association runs dry.

  1. Anchor on the Center Letter

Every accepted word must contain the center letter. Keep it visible in your head as you scan possible beginnings, endings, and word families. When you stall, recheck the center-letter rule before hunting for something exotic.

  2. Make a First Pass for Familiar Words

Look across the hive for words you already know before narrowing your search. Check each word against the puzzle instead of assuming a familiar spelling will be accepted. The solver can verify a borderline candidate.

  3. Work Through Word Families

When the available letters allow it, test a base word with related endings or beginnings: plurals, verb forms, and derived words. Try each form separately, since the curated answer list does not guarantee every form counts.

  4. Search for a Pangram

A pangram uses all seven hive letters at least once and earns a seven-point bonus. Try building around the letter that is hardest to place, but move on and return later if the pattern does not appear. The pangram archive shows how often real hives produce them.

  5. Use Starting-Letter Clues

If you are stuck, open the spoiler-free hints to review word-length counts and two-letter starts. They point you to unexplored parts of the hive without showing individual answers.

  6. Shuffle the Hive

If the game provides a shuffle control, use it to change the positions of the outer letters. A different layout loosens the patterns your eyes locked onto and makes another combination easier to notice.

  7. Keep Track of What You Have Tried

Use the found-word list to avoid repeating guesses, then return to a letter pair or word length that still has possible answers. Coverage beats inspiration when the easy words run out.

  8. Take a Break When You Need One

The puzzle does not need to be a race. If you stop seeing new combinations, pause and return with a fresh look. The day's hive stays put until the next release.

Common Strategy Questions

Should I always find the pangram first?

No. A pangram adds seven bonus points, but the best order depends on the letters and the words you can see. If a pangram is not coming together, continue with other parts of the hive and return to it later.

Are all plurals and verb forms accepted?

No. The NYT uses an editor-curated answer list. Test each form in the game rather than assuming a related word will be accepted.

Do hints reveal the answers?

The spoiler-free hints page shows counts and letter patterns, not individual solution words. The answers page and the solver have separate reveal controls.

Does a pangram guarantee Genius?

No. A pangram earns its word-length points plus a seven-point bonus. Genius depends on the puzzle's total possible points.

When does the daily puzzle reset?

The NYT lists a daily release time of 3 a.m. Eastern Time. The hive, rank progress, and the found-word list all restart with the new puzzle.
