What Is a Spelling Bee Word Finder?
A spelling bee word finder turns a handful of letters into every matching word in the dictionary. Instead of staring at the hive and guessing, you type the letters, press search, and scan a clean list of real words.
This word finder works for the NYT Spelling Bee, our free unlimited hive, and any custom set of letters. Up to three wildcards (? or space) stand in for letters you are missing, and the four filters trim the results down to exactly the word you need.
How the Search Filters Work
Every filter stacks on top of the letters you entered, so a few boxes can turn hundreds of matches into the one word you need.
| Filter | What It Does | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Letters | The letters the word can be built from | AEINRST finds RETAINS and STAINER |
| Starts | Words that begin with the letters you give | TH finds THE, THIS, and THORN |
| Ends | Words that end with the letters you give | ING finds TURNING and RAINING |
| Contains | Words with the letter or sequence inside | ST finds FIRST, LAST, and BEST |
| Length | Words with an exact letter count | 5 returns only five-letter words |
| Wildcards | ? or a space counts as any letter | A_E finds AGE, ALE, and APE |
Tips for Finding Words Faster
Four habits that get more out of every search.
Search the Whole Hive
Type all seven letters from a NYT Spelling Bee hive, then set Contains to the required center letter. Every word in the results is a legal play, and the longest entries are your pangram candidates.
Start With the Longest Group
Results group by length, and the top groups are where pangrams hide. Those are also the highest scoring words in the real puzzle.
Wildcard Your Way Out
Stuck on a word you almost have? Replace the missing letters with ? or a space and let the lexicon fill the gaps.
Borrow Common Endings
Setting Ends to ING, ED, ER, or TION turns a weak set of letters into a pile of finds. Suffixes account for many of the longest spelling bee words.
