Possibly from Middle English anelas, from Old French alesnaz, from alesne (“awl”), from Frankish *alisnu, *alasnu (“awl”), related to Old High German alasna, Alemannic German Alesne, Alse (“awl”); compare also Old High German āla (“awl”).
