A dry salt lake, in the Saharan area of Africa, that stays dry in the summer but receives some water in the winter.

Borrowed from French chott, from Arabic شَطّ (šaṭṭ). Some of the alternative forms/synonyms (shatt, shat) derive directly from Arabic.
